Marga Douma-Alta

Education & field of expertise

Marga Marga Douma-Alta (1967) attended the Nel Roos Academy for Ballet, both the Classical Ballet and the Teacher programme. She was trained in the Vaganova, Graham, Horton and improvisation techniques and the Jazz dance styles of Henny Kamerman and Eddi de Bie.

After her education she danced with Jazz Extension Dance Theater where she worked among others with choreographers like Fred Benjamin, Ralph Paul Haze and Henny Kamerman. On parallel she worked for twelve years as a free Lance dancer, mannequin and model in the Netherlands, Germany and France.

Marga followed masterclasses Jazz dance & Choreography in Paris by Rick Odums, Matt Mattox, Geraldine Armstrong and Donald McKayle. She also followed lessons in New York at Broadway Dance Centre, Steps on Broadway and The Alvin Ailey School. She performed a research into the history of Jazz dance dance in the Netherlands, which resulted in the publication of the book Jazzdance.nl by publisher the Walburg Pers. In 2012, Marga achieved her Master of Education in Arts at the Amsterdams Academy of Arts.

Teacher & Choreographer

From 1988 to 1998, Marga owned her own ballet school in Badhoevedorp where she teached Classical Ballet, Jazz dance as well as children lessons. She was also active as a teacher of Classical Ballet at the preliminary programme for Dance Teacher at the Amsterdam Academy of Arts. Since 2006, Marga is the Artistic Leader of the Dance programme of the Art & Entertainment College of Amsterdam. She is the lead dance coordinator and ballet teacher. As teacher of theory she designed lesson modules for Dance & Society and for Entrepeneurship for dancers. Marga also designed her own style of dance called Classic-Jazz, a mix of Classical Ballet and Jazz dance. She was asked to teach this style at various distinguished dance academies in China.

As a choregrapher, she created various works for the Art & Entertainment College as well as the Amsterdam Urban Dance Company. Choreographies as "Malaria No More"(2009), "Step outside your frame of mind" (2010), "La Danca Eclectica"(2010), "Let Me Be"(2011), "Fiesta" (2011), "Give me a kiss" (2013) and "Los(t)" (2013). As a director she created productions for her own ballet school, final presentations of the Art & Entertainment College and also for the Amsterdam Urban Dance Company owned by Stichting Jam, with which she went on tour across China three times.
